PC won’t Turn ON? Mistakes along with fixes

After you finish up your PC build, you’re very excited to turn on the computer. But, after pushing the power button, your PC is not turning on? Then these might be the mistakes that you’ve made in a PC build. This page will help you solve them and make your PC turn ON.

Is your PC has compatible components?

This is the first thing that you need to check before anything else. If you’ve already used your PC, then this not be a problem for you. You can ignore this section and move to the next one to know the reason for your PC won’t get started.

To know whether the components are supportable are not, you need to check the manual of the motherboard. In case you don’t have the manual of your motherboard, you may get it on the web.

But for that, you need to know the model of your motherboard. To find the model of your motherboard, follow these steps.

  1. Open the Run tab (Windows key + R)
  2. Type “msifo32.exe” in it and press Enter
  3. The system information tab will open. There you can find the model of your motherboard.

After knowing the model, type it on Google for its manual. If you get the manual in pdf format, that’s really fine.

If there is no manual available for your motherboard on the web (in rare cases, especially if your motherboard is old), it’s ok to get information from the official website of your motherboard brand.

If your PC components are compatible, you are lucky enough to get it to start with no additional cost. Otherwise, you need to change the PC components.

No power supply to your PC :

This is not a common mistake, because every one of you knew that computer is working with the electrical power supply. But the reason here I mention it is, sometimes we forget to switch on the power supply. And sit in front of the PC to push the power button on the CPU.

If this was your case, you don’t need to check the further eight steps to turn on your PC. Go to the power supply switchboard, and turn on the switch.

Plug the cable properly :

Sometimes you may be in a hurry to turn on the PC before checking the power plug cable. Whether you properly insert it or not after your PC build, it matters.

A loose plug connection can interrupt the current flow to your computer. And result in PC won’t turn ON. Usually, the power plug cable is coming up with high quality. So, there is less chance to get it damage.

However, it’s better to check the cable to know the damages like burnouts, wire cuts, etc. If the power plug is damaged, replace it.

Without knowing the problem exactly where it is, you don’t need to change the hardware components like SMPS, Motherboard, CPU cabinet, etc.

Turn ON the SMPS power switch :

Especially for beginners, this is the thing that you need to check once or twice before turn on the computer.

The computer won’t get power to start if the Power Supply Unit PSU or SMPS is in OFF state. So, make sure it is in the ON position.

Also, make sure that your PSU is capable to supply power to all the components in your PC. Because a 250 or 300 Watts power is not enough for gaming computers. Getting low power or insufficient power is also one reason for your PC not getting started.

Note: “O” means OFF mode and “-” means ON

Unplug the optional devices :

Sometimes the external devices like pen drives, internet or Wi-Fi adapter, Bluetooth adapter, and other optional drives may affect the system startup. There are so many reasons for this non-sync.

However, it’s better to remove the external hardware or optional devices from your computer and try to start again.

If the problem still exists, you need to open your CPU cabinet to check the problem, because the above 5 mistakes are the only mistakes that you made externally to your computer.

From now on, you need to be careful to handle the hardware parts of your PC.

Don’t ignore the front panel connectors :

This is the most common mistake that people ignore in their PC build. Since they all connected in the same place (side-by-side), they are different in direction and working.

The name itself says that they connected with the front panel. In the front panel of a CPU cabinet, we find the main switch of the computer to start. So, if we didn’t connect the front panel connectors properly, the power button can’t work, and the result PC could not start.

Insert the 24 Pin power cable in the right position :

The 24 Pin is also called the power cable or main cable from the PSU to the motherboard. So, you must need to care while inserting it on the board.

Remember, there is a sign to identify the insertion position. Likely, place the cable in a proper direction and insert it perfectly.

If this is your problem, your PC will definitely turn ON after doing this. Otherwise, go for the next one.

Is the stock cooler working fine?

I’m asking this because without proper cooling the computer can’t work properly. Especially, the stock cooler is very important to a computer.

If there is no stock cooler, we do not control CPU temperature and this extreme heat coming out from the processor leads to burnout of the processor and after that, the other PC components like motherboard, hard-disk, RAM, etc, will get damage.

So, because of this severe problem, nobody wants to start their PC without the stock cooler. And for this reason, I suggest that you check the stock cooler.

I didn’t mean that you’re trying to start your computer without a stock cooler. But here my point is, stock coolers have a limited lifespan. If your stock cooler expires, its fan revolution becomes low and result in low cooling to the processor.

If this is the case, processor refused to start your PC. So, providing enough cooling to the computer is important.

Also, PC case airflow needs to be good.

Insert the compatible GPU properly :

As I said before, compatible PC components are compulsory. If you are sure about your GPU, which is compatible with your motherboard, then the problem is insertion.

Remove the GPU card from the board and clean the slot (remove the dust and other particles) and reinsert it on the motherboard. Use the locker to lock the GPU.

After doing this, the problem from the GPU side will not occur.

Clean frequently :

Just like our home, desktop PCs also needs to be clean frequently. Because of using air cooling to the computers, the dust from the atmosphere will enter to the CPU case.

This leads to damage to the computer components. And IO shield’s primary use is to protect the CPU parts from dust.

The computer won’t work with the damaged parts. So, you have to protect your PC from the dust by cleaning it frequently.

Swap the connections on the Motherboard :

Swapping the connections might help you in turning ON your PC. It means interchanging the RAM sticks on the board and shift the SATA connecting ports on the motherboard.

Don’t forget to give proper connections to every piece of hardware in the CPU.

The motherboard light is ON but the PC won’t turn ON – What to do?

Is your motherboard lights are ON but your PC or monitor displays nothing? In that case, these might be the reasons for your PC not displaying anything.

The power supply to the monitor is missing :

Along with the CPU, the monitor also needs a power supply. So, if your monitor displays nothing and the motherboard is working, then you need to check whether the power supply to the monitor is giving is not.

HDMI, VGA connecting cables are not working :

These cables might not be the problem in many situations, Yet, it is important to check when your PC is not working properly.

No matter what cable (HDMI, VGA, DVI, etc) you are using to connect the CPU and a monitor, use high-quality cables.

Pins on low-quality cables will damage easily and it interrupts the signal which is passing through it. That means your monitor displays nothing or showing “No signal” or “Signal error”.

Also, one best practice is, remove the cable and insert it again because a dust-containing cable or an imperfect connecting cable also causes the error.

Have you inserted the RAM stick?

Another mistake is forgetting the RAM stick to place in a setup. I think there is no need to say the importance of Random Access Memory in a computer.

Without RAM, your computer displays nothing or displays a single blue screen.

You may missed the RAM stick to place, just check once.

Insert the RAM and GPU card properly :

Even you inserted the RAM and GPU, they may not perfectly installed. In this case, your PC is in blank mode. So, open the case, eject the RAM and GPU, and reinsert them. Then turn ON the PC in normal. It works. This is the most common reason for the blank screen while the motherboard is working.

Use the Reset button on your case :

Sometimes the computer needs to analyze the recent changes that you’ve made. But it fails to do that. So, we need to give the manual action to the computer that “I made changes to PC and you need to analyze it”.

We made it by pushing the reset button on a CPU case. But it is not available for many computers because overdoing the reset process corrupts the data in a computer. So, it is my final recommendation.
