When it comes to RAM memory, you may hear about these terms DDR3 and DDR4. Especially when you want to buy a RAM stick for your PC, the information on this page will help you to choose the best one.
Today, we are going to see the meaning of DDR3 and DDR4, compatibility, advantages, comparison DDR3 vs DDR4, and finally conclude with the best RAM model.
A brief introduction about RAM.
RAM is a type of memory used in electronic devices like mobiles, computers, laptops, etc. Its purpose is to store the files that are currently running on a device. If any interruption occurs like closing the app or power cut, then this memory will get erased automatically. And so it is also called volatile memory.
The RAM memory plays a key role in the performance of a computer.
Of course, the other PC components are also important but RAM serves its unique purpose.
What is DDR3?
The DDR3 RAM also called Double Data Rate 3rd generation Random Access Memory was available in the market since 2007. It has a maximum clock speed of 1066 MHz with a 240 Pin interface. It consumes more power than DDR4 i.e., around 1.3 to 1.5 volts.
The DDR3 RAM is an old type of memory compared to DDR4.
What is DDR4?
The Double Data Rate 4th generation RAM also called DDR4 and was entered in a PC case in 2014. It is coming up with a 288 Pin interface. And the clock speed is also high compared to DDR3 i.e., around 800 to 1600 MHz. It consumes less power of 1.2 volts maximum.
This is the latest RAM type used in mobiles, computers, etc.
The DDR3 SDRAM type was introduced in 2005 at first, but it was officially available in the market in 2007.
The RAM updates are important because software is updating frequently to enhance the security levels in it. Though the system is a combination of software and hardware, they both need to be in sequence to improve the system performance at cheap cost as much as possible.
That’s why updates are common in both software and hardware areas.
Compare to hardware, the software of a system frequently updating.
In today’s topic, DDR4 is the latest RAM type that we are using and it does not end. DDR5 memory will come soon. Find when DDR5 will come and its features.
Just like RAM, Read-Only Memory also updated from Hard disk to SSD. In what way SSD is better than Hard disk? Find here HDD vs DDD.

What type of RAM my PC has?
Finding the RAM type that exists on your PC is necessary. Because when you want to upgrade your PC RAM, you may get confused about which one to buy and which is suitable for your PC.
If you are using a laptop or custom-built PC, then there is a chance that you might haven’t known about your system information like processor, RAM type, storage capacity, etc.
Follow the to find the type of RAM memory on your PC.
- Right-click on the taskbar and select ‘Task Manager.’
- On the menu, select ‘Performance.’
- Your RAM type will display here on the top of memory usage.
This is the simple way to find the RAM type on your PC. However, this is not the definite way to find it (like in my case).
There is another way that can define the complete system information along with the RAM type.
For that, you need to install this CPU-Z app and run it on your PC. It can analyze your system properties and display them.
The app interface is like this. Just click on the ‘Memory’ right to the ‘Mainboard’ and it will display the RAM model on your PC.
Note: The CPU-Z app is safe to use. I’m using it and didn’t face any problem. In fact, the app provides a lot of information about the system in less time. And that’s why I recommend it.
Can I upgrade my PC RAM from DDR3 to DDR4?
In laptops, the manufacturing companies can already build DDR4 RAM if the motherboard supports it. In fewer cases, it is possible that the motherboard supports DDR4 type but the laptop came with the 3rd Gen memory.
If this was the case, there is no problem to upgrade from DDR3 to DDR4.
Of course, some motherboards can support both DDR3 and DDR4. In that case, you can choose any one of them to install on your motherboard.

Note: You can use either DDR3 or DDR4 on your PC if your motherboard supports both. But don’t use both of them at a time.
If you are planning to build a high-end gaming PC, wait for few months, the next version of RAM memory DDR5 coming soon.
