Laptops are good portable machines. But there are some problems with Laptops over desktop PCs. The screen size is also one of them. To overcome this issue, today, we’re going to see how to connect a monitor to a Laptop. The monitor is one of the compulsory parts of a computer.
Some common problems with the laptop screen:
- The laptop screen is small, so we can’t experience the quality of pictures, videos, etc.
- Laptop screens are highly sensitive, and they can easily get damaged when the temperature rises.
- Except for gaming laptops, the normal laptops have a low refresh rate. So they are not recommended for gaming.
- While performing multitask, the screen space is not enough.
These are the common problems raised with laptop screens. You can find the solution to all the above problems by connecting the perfect monitor for your work with your laptop.
Let’s see the process in step by step.
Check the common ports to a laptop and monitor :
This is the first thing we need to check. There are different ports like HDMI, VGA, Display port, DVI, etc. We can choose the common port present on a laptop and monitor.
Here, my laptop (Asus X200la) has both HDMI and VDA ports. But my Dell monitor has a Display port and VGA. So, VGA is the common port for both the monitor and the laptop. Among different types of monitors, you need to select the best and perfect one for you.
Choose the connecting cable :
I just want to connect a monitor to a laptop for normal use. So, I choose VGA cable here. If you want the use your laptop performance at a peak with the monitor, then I suggest you use a Display port or HDMI because they perform well compared to VGA.
If you want to connect a monitor to a laptop even with different ports, then use the converters like HDMI to VGA or Display to HDMI converter, etc.
Insert the cable on both devices :
Now the three things (Laptop, VGA cable, and Monitor) are ready to make a setup. First, we need to connect one end of the VGA cable to the monitor and the other end is to connect with the laptop.
Go gentle while connecting the cable because all the pins are very sensitive. If you push hard in the connecting process, it may lead to getting damage to the monitor or laptop. So be careful. And another thing, I want you to make sure of is to check the direction of the port while you inserting the cable.
Turn ON your laptop & monitor :
After connecting both ends of the cable to the monitor and laptop, the setup process is complete. Now, turn on the power supply to both the monitor and the laptop. And then, turn on the power button on your laptop. Immediately, the Windows loading screen on your laptop will make a duplicate screen on your monitor through the connecting cable. By this, you can use both screens at a time.
If you don’t want to use multiple screens, see the next step to find out the useful feature in Windows 10.
Select the ‘project’ feature in Windows 10 :
We have a feature called ‘project’ in Windows 10. The function of this feature is to control the monitor and laptop screen at a time.
The above figure shows the options present in the ‘project.’ They are four. We can see them one by one.
- PC screen only
- Second screen only
PC screen only :
By selecting this, only your computer or laptop screen will be active and the remaining screen of monitors are inactive. For a simple work, this is the best option to select.
Duplicate screen :
Duplicating a screen means you can see the same screen on two devices, a laptop, and a monitor. It is not much useful because nobody wants the same thing here and there.
Communication between two screens is possible with this feature. For example, if you’re looking at a picture on your laptop screen and not satisfied with the visual experience, then you can move that picture to the monitor that is connected to the laptop.
Based on features present in the monitor, you can feel the visuals and performance.
Second screen only :
By this option, only the second screen (the external connecting monitor) will be active. Even though the laptop is working, its screen will become blank.
Most people prefer either a ‘PC screen only’ or a ‘second screen only’ than a ‘duplicate screen’ for a better experience.

Wireless connection between laptop and monitor :
To make a wireless connection possible, we have a good feature called Miracast. In Windows 10, miracast is a built-in feature. So, we don’t have any problem from the Windows side to sync. Find more useful Windows tips and tricks here.
We make this wireless connection in two ways.
Monitor with ‘Miracast’ built-in feature :
If the monitor that you connected to your laptop has a built-in miracast feature, then it is the best and easy way to prefer it to others.
The process is simple, follow the steps here:
- Turn on the miracast feature on your monitor or TV (Settings are different from device to device). And make your device discoverable.
- Now, on your Windows 10 laptop, go to the notification panel (Bottom Right) and select ‘project’ (Windows key+P)
- Then click on ‘Connect to a wireless display’
- After that, you’ll see the monitor network on your PC. Click on the network and connect to it.
- Now you make a wireless connection between your laptop and monitor.
This process is suggestible if you have a miracast built-in monitor. Otherwise, you need to use a Wi-Fi dongle.
Use Wi-Fi display dongle :
The Wi-Fi display dongle creates the miracast network with the monitor. And so the network will be displayed on the laptop screen even the monitor was not built in with miracast feature.
Then the process is the same. You can select your monitor device among the listed ones and connect to it.
